Vintage Movie Nights? The Best.

Who didn't love to hate Steff in Pretty in Pink? After watching this one in the late 80's, I was inspired to try my hand at sewing. ( I failed miserably. Prom dress was promptly purchased.) Team Duckie!

St. Elmo's Fire--my college best friends continue to steal my heart. And, it's true, sometimes, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Less Than Zero made me want to move to Los Angeles (when I first watched it whilst babysitting at the mature age of 11.) Not really sure why...the palm trees? I was never half as cool as Jamie Gertz's character but still, not much has changed (never say never...wait for me, L.A.!) And, congrats Robert Downey Jr. on your new baby but, sadly, I really thought we had a chance... ;-)

Hmmm...what would I do differently to Jule's apartment? NOTHING! OK, maybe I'd lose the blue halo, but I would def keep the earring lit up against a bright pink wall. We should all have a decorator named Ron.

Some Kind of Wonderful. Come on! If confidence isn't the sexiest quality about someone?! Who rocked a short-short haircut in high school better than Watts?

Vintage movie nights could make you nostalgic for John Hughes, Brat Packs and scrunchies. But, only for approx. 90 minutes (without commercial breaks). Good news, 90 minutes is a gold mine of time for inspirational ideas!

PS: After recently discussing a vintage movie night with friends (one whose boyfriend had the audacity to say "Turn these off, they suck." ) We told him that he must have missed the "crush" phase-- because when you watch these in your early teens, they stay with you forever...and ever and ever. They catch you at a certain phase, and never let you go.

PSS: Thanks to that high school pal who just reminded me that "Hilary, it's not OK for you to wear a cowboy hat to class and you will not carry a skate board." For many reasons, I am forever grateful.

Broadway Playbill Frame

Most people have to pick and choose what to collect or save. I'm all about sentimental value but some things just have to go. For me, cluttered space = cluttered mind!

I had two boxes filled with Broadway playbills from shows I had seen over the years. I thought about individually framing them and hanging them in rows. I also thought about cutting off the covers for a Tony Awards-themed event I was planning and pasting them in a collage on the top of the bar before fitting a piece of glass over it.

I went to my local framer for ideas, and brought the measurements of one of my blank walls. He had the ingenious idea of cutting one big frame to custom fit around all of the playbills. It's huge! And it looks perfect in the room.

If you did host a Tony Awards viewing party with a playbill-themed piece, you could string lights and create your own 42nd Street right at home. Just don't break a leg! ;-)

Vintage Love.

I get pretty excited about a great vintage find. I found this sweet little vintage Chanel label at an antique store near Stonington, Rhode Island. And, this hand-painted French tray was literally "found" on a hall table in my apartment building. There is this strange table where residents leave unwanted treasures, instead of throwing them out, for others to take if they want (NY'ers--do have one of these tables too?). I really shouldn't call it strange, since I've seen many people walk into the building wearing a former pair of shoes and even dresses of mine (I only want it back when it looks better on them). It's fashionable recyclying at it's best I guess.

That adorable sleep mask is from one of my most beloved vintage stores in NYC: Darling. The owner, Ann French Emonts, was a former Broadway costume designer and has an incredible eye--she is the ultimate Mermaid. A while back I worked at a magazine and we hosted the first-ever Yoga festival in Central Park. At the time I wasn't really into yoga but was soon turned on to the idea of practicing Yoga to quiet a noisy mind.

I recently visited this beautiful little spot, the Omega Institute, in Rhinebeck, New York for a mini yoga retreat. (http://eomega.org/) Very rustic accomodations (true dorm-room style) the entire "campus" is on a beautiful lake and features a meditation temple. And, a really great bookstore--I picked up these cards because I loved their messages. Especially "Don't believe everything you think."

Only a short train ride from NYC, you can kayak, canoe, do yoga or just do nothing. It's a wonderful way to get the noise out of your head on a weekend getaway. And, there are really great hammocks. So bring a book! ;-)

Snowy Day Project.

I love a snowy, cozy day. First of all, it's the perfect excuse to nest. Second, it's a great opportunity to tackle a project that keeps falling off of one to-do list to the next one...week after week. I was tired of looking at a certain wall in my apartment and equally tired of never finding the right piece of jewelry when I needed it!

My friend Berns helped me sort through a mess of a drawer that was overstuffed with jewelry. Typically, in a City apartment, you have to make the most of every spot. And, my boring white wall was up to no good. It was valuable unused real estate, so I made it into a Jewelry Box of sorts with the best part being now I will see what I have every day.

Command 3M makes great no-damage, adhesive hooks that will not take the paint off your wall and you can easily move them around. I used the hooks but you could be much more creative and hang jewelry from vintage hooks or doorknobs. On top, I tied a ribbon to both ends of a bookshelf to easily poke earrings and pins into.

I also found a killer decal (I know that sounds like a contradiction) to go on this wall, and my Dad is making me a thin wooden table to fit underneath (yes, he's making it!) that I will paint a lacquered Tiffany Box blue.

Thank you Berns for all of your help and your height in reaching the top of my bookcase. ;-)

Three things my nose loves.

My nose pretty much loves Jo Malone-anything, but I've been addicted to her room sprays for years. Right now I'm using Basil & Verbena. I'm also a huge fan of the Wild Fig & Cassis scent. They both sound heavy but are actually really clean and not too overwhelming. You can spritz all over your home or even use as a light body spray. http://www.jomalone.com/

My friend Sarah Tallman created a beautiful fragrance line, Grove, New York. Her signature scent evokes Bay rum, orange groves and her Dad's cologne. I was a lucky duck to be one of the first "scent testers" for her latest creations--I love spraying this one around my home or on newly washed linens and sheets. Right around the corner from my apartment is a sneaky little night owl that likes to stay open until 11PM. It's name is Soapology and is highly distracting when I am walking home from dinner in the neighborhood. One of my favorite things to do there is create my own signature diffuser oil by mixing my picks from their wall of essences. Right now, I'm really into "Fresh Cut Roses" mixed with "Tobacco and Caramel." The end result is this really fresh, sweet (but not too sweet) fragrance that seems to settle the energy of a room. Roll Out the Red Carpet...

It's officially red carpet season! We wish we were heading to Mr. Weinstein's party this weekend at Chateau Marmont to kick off the 69th annual Golden Globes--but, we know anyone can create their own star-studded evening at home. The Mermaids love hosting award show events, here are some of our favorite tips on treating guests like superstars.

Email your guests a ballot that doubles as the invitation. Ask them to select their pick of winners in advance. Collect the answers a couple of days before your event so you can organize the votes in an easy way to tally during your party. Invite guests to wear black tie if it's an Oscar party or festive casual attire for the Golden Globes or SAG awards.

Design signature cocktails around the big celebrity nominees. Maybe the “Clooney” is a smooth, classic martini? Or, serve Dragon-tinis and paste temporary tattoos on the sides of the glasses. Or, keep it simple and chic and greet guests with champagne flutes and place star fruits on the rims.

Roll out the red carpet! We rent or buy these for our events a lot, they come in all colors from traditional red to pink, gold or printed motifs. You can also make your own with inexpensive red fabric. Take digital photos of your guests early in the evening, and then take a few minutes to print them out on glossy photo paper during the party. Hang the photos on a wall or bulletin board, and ask your guests for their autographs. Or, you could create your very own Sardi's wall by hiring a caricature artist at your party. You will have your own Walk of Fame by the end of the night.

Send guests home with mini boxes of popcorn, or boxed movie candy tied with ribbon and a pair of movie vouchers so guests can enjoy a movie night on you. You can also design your entire party to your favorite movie pick of the year. Transform your pad into a Hawaiian paradise in honor of "The Descendants" or recreate a 1920's Hollywood film set as a nod to "The Artist." They were my two favorite nominated films this year. On Sunday night, I'll be at a Golden Globes viewing party rooting for Clooney and Rooney. And, just like every other year, paying an equal amount of attention to the dresses, shoes and jewels...of course.

Moons & Stars.

The Mermaids get alot of emails asking about venues, vendors and creative party themes. When it comes to an event like a baby shower, pink and blue can be a little boring. Many of us want to host a memorable event without breaking the piggy bank. We think a great gender-neutral party theme is “Moons and Stars,” which we created for our favorite Mermaid, Jamie.

These adorable cupcakes were a huge hit, except blue frosting makes for blue teeth. Always. So, serve these at the end of the party.

Themed decor ideas include constellation light lamps-you can put them on the floor to spray a beautiful light constellation on the ceiling of the room. Hire an astrologer to give readings to guests, and feature star nightlights for the Mama-to-be to take home for the nursery.

Our signature cocktail was the "Goodnight Moon", a simple flute of champagne with “blueberry moons” dropped inside.

Baby bottle centerpieces were cheap-and-chic to create. And, Starburst candy dishes placed around the room.

I ordered cocktail napkins and had them customized with different sayings from nursery rhymes and even pop songs, like Madonna’s “Lucky Star.” And, Jamie found the perfect party favors; bath salts tailored to each of her guest's star sign with hand-drawn illustrations. Winter Windows.

As winter has softly (snow, please?) started to write it's story on New York City, one of the biggest chapters may be the holiday windows around town. These could easily be compared to the Super Bowl of department stores. Except instead of 2 teams,there are 3 teams that win for me--and they are always the 3 B's!

Team 1: Bergdorf Goodman. 2011 Window Theme: Carnival of the Animals.

I mean, so beautiful. This iconic store has become a holiday tradition for me, having lunch with my Mom at the Bird Cage, designed by Kelly Wearstler and then browsing for the most unique holiday ornaments a few paces down on the 7th floor. The restaurant is actually not called the Bird Cage but "BG." But, you may find that you feel perched on the most beautiful nest up there--with the very best views of Central Park. http://www.bergdorfgoodman.com/

Team 2: Barneys. 2011 Window Theme: Lady Gaga.

Coolest team-up of the year. Barney's transformed their 5th floor to become "Gaga's Workshop" curated by Lady Gaga, herself. The store front windows? Lady Gaga as a metallic Mermaid is pretty captivating against a grey Manhattan sidewalk. (And I'm only a little partial to this one.)

Team 3: Bendels. 2011 Window Theme: Christmas Spectacular.

Henri Bendel's windows are inspired by the 125th birthday of Miss Liberty & Radio City Music Hall's Christmas Spectacular, featuring a sort of "Rockette-Statue-of-Liberty" wearing a dress made of jelly beans and a reindeer dog. If I was a tourist passing through, I'd buy them a drink.

Saks Fifth Avenue was a great runner-up with a pretty cool snowflake 3-D light show set to holiday music. But, it left me a little bored. I guess snowflakes are hard to compete this year with Miss Liberty, Mermaids and Gaga. The show kind of reminded me of being at all-girl's private school back in the day in the bell choir. Fun, but not exactly exhilarating.

I scheduled a hot date with my flat-screen last week. My TiVo list was overflowing, so I re-watched two great movies that were recorded. The first was Down With Love starring Renee Zellweger as writer, "Barbara Novak" and Ewan McGregor as her arch nemesis, "Catcher Block."

What working girl wouldn't love to come home to this pad after a long day at the office? Mid-century magic at it's best. I am downright-in-love with the Old-Hollywood decor vibe in this space. The set designer is a genius. Can someone tell me where can I find a marble fire pit like that?!

I was also obsessed with every character's retro outfit. Especially, when our leading lady rocks a white turban. And, pink Maribou slippers? I mean...go big or go home, Babs.

Of course, the film wraps with our reluctant heroine no longer feeling down about love. Shocking twist, right?

My second Film-spiration was The Ghost Writer directed by Roman Polanski. I could watch this movie 100 times! It's so well done. Most of the story is depicted at a vacation home on the East Coast--off the dunes in Cape Cod. But, since we know Polanski is not allowed back on U.S. soil, it's crazy how he captured the film. I wasn't sure where it was filmed but recently read it was the Island of Stylt off the coast of Germany. Again, the set design was unbelievably seductive. I admired everything about the house, built with super clean lines in mind and modern edges that off-set the wild and rustic beachy bluffs outside.

Especially the office-complete with tricked-out blinds and a surreal view.

As I'm writing, I realize that both films starred Ewan McGregor in which he plays a bit of a cad-ish, womanizing writer. Hmmm...probably best not to overthink that one. ;-)

White Elephant Party.

Mermaids & Martinis planned a White Elephant party for one of our favorite clients. Hosted in a beautiful venue called the “White Room” at Soho House, NYC, our client wanted festive but not over-the-top expensive. We got creative and spray-painted hundreds of circus-style peanuts gold and filled large glass vases with them using bases of fake snow. We scattered more snow and gold peanuts along the bar and cocktail tables and brought in a beautiful white ceramic elephant to hold the presents. A white and whimsical signature cocktail could be Eggnog themed and served on bamboo serving platters.

The primary purpose of a White Elephant (otherwise known as Secret Santa, Yankee Swap) is a gift swap. Everyone brings a present (which can be a good present or a “‘gag”’ gift, depending on the host’s preference), and then everyone participates in a game of chance to determine what present they take home. Depending on their number, guests may either “steal” a gift from a person who has selected before them, or they may select and unwrap a new gift. The game ends when each person has had a turn.

I have two White Elephant parties coming up, one will be for all ladies and the price point is $30 or less. The second one will be a gift of $100 or less and targeted to a mixture of kids and adults.

Happy 3.

A friend and I have a weekly tradition called: "Happy 3." It started because after many years of many long conversations over lunches or cocktails, we realized that we could talk about doing things and changing things in our lives--but what's the point if we walk away with no action items? Talking is great, but it requires no action. No change. A to-do list can be terrifying the longer it gets, and the best of intentions without actually crossing off something can add up to feeling not-so-happy.

So, we developed a "Happy 3" lunch and try our best to meet once a week to discuss three small (or sometimes big) things that we both walk away from our get-together and DO.

This week, my "Happy 3" is:
1.) Order a holiday gift from Livy's Hope.

A friend from high school has two beautiful twin girls Hailey and Livy. Livy was born with an illness so her parents started this foundation for her. You can order a customized painting from Hailey, who is beyond talented at the age of seven! Over the Summer, I ordered a painting from Hailey and told her that I write about kids parties themed around "Mermaids & Milk & Cookies." Look what she sent me!

2.) I am going to handcuff myself to a quiet room and finish reading this book. To be inspired is to be alive and this man figured it out.

3.) Organize my photos. I know this sounds like an easy job, but my neighbor is a professional in-home organization expert, and I'm enlisting hired help! Years of photos are in boxes and I can't wait to put them in proper albums and feel lighter. My to-do list for this weekend was making me feel a little car-sick. At least three things are getting checked off this weekend, which will make heading into next week a much smoother ride.

May Your Days Be Merry and White.

I love the idea of a White Christmas themed dinner party. Here are a few ideas to welcome guests this winter to a wonderfully white time.

Greet guests with a white wreath. This one is made out of paper cups--cheap & chic! I found a similar chalkboard at one of my favorite stores (www.mxyplyzyk.com). It has an adhesive strip on the back so you can hang anywhere and it peels right off without damaging your walls.

Hang another wreath for the littles at your party.

Of course, you will want to have a white tree. The one photographed below is pretty amazing. When you introduce one contrasting color to a white-themed event, it will really pop throughout your decor.

Creating a white-based menu can be fun. You can start by decorating your table in a cheap & chic way by laying down white craft paper and then sprinkling tons of fake white snow on top. Light lots of white votives in clear glass jars down the center. Or, swish your table up by using a faux white fur throw as a cloth. Place raised silver chargers on top for the food. Make fondue the star of your menu! Spray paint pumpkins white and hollow them out, then fill each one with a cheese fondue paired with fresh cut pieces of bread and veggies.

A signature cocktail could be created with white cranberry juice, vodka and served in a martini glass. Drape a white candy cane on the side of the glasses. A white dessert bar is easy! White chocolate cupcakes, popcorn balls, meringues, white candy and I love this Italian dessert, Affogato, which is a scoop of vanilla ice cream served in a sundae glass and you pour a shot of espresso over the top. Drizzle white creme de menthe on top.

In Paris, the Toilet Paper is Pink.

Paris breaks my heart. I need a new word for love when it comes to Paris.

Cliche you say? (how original...another American girl who LOVES Paris?) Yawn. Well, it's easy to be a critic. But, you do have a point. Over the weekend, I had a glass of Cotes Du Rhone with a friend and we worked out the obsession in three simple reasons why any girl might fall in love Paris.

Un. Macarons.

And, all the sweets made on French soil. The way a patisserie pays attention to detail is epic.

Deux. The toilet paper is pink. Like, the kind of every day, ordinary toilet paper that you buy at CVS or the grocery store in bulk is PINK.

So, the big picture reads that even the TP is pretty! And, the men in France roll that TP out without batting an eyelash. To them, pink is just an attractive color that makes perfect sense to have in a room where not-so-attractive things sometimes happen.

Men in France seem to have a masculine appreciation for feminine things. Now, American guys are amazing and sexy and smart (and many certainly appreciate beauty) but how many do you know that would use pink toilet paper without feeling just a tad emasculated?

Trois. Appreciation for Lunch.

Lunch is an event. Lunch is not a hurried task to fuel yourself quickly so you can rush back to check the next thing off of your daily to-do list. It's a moment, a memory...to be savored and enjoyed.

Winter Flowers & Feast of the Seven Fishes.

Some believe that it's inconsiderate to bring flowers to a party because the host will have to stop and take the time to cut stems and search for the right vase. If you have a garden or live near a great florist (or here in NYC, a deli!), why not cut and create your own arrangement and provide the right sized vase? If it's a short walk, drive or train ride to the party, lightly dampen a cute kitchen towel and wrap the bouquet at the bottom--all your host will have to do is put water in the great vase you provided! She can keep the kitchen towel for post party clean-up.

Some of my favorite winter flowers to create holiday arrangements are: Amaryllis, protea, snow balls, poppies, evergreen, holly berry, and the lovely Star of Bethlehem. Note, if you are on a budget, buy one or two beautiful buds, and then fill in with lots of greenery which will make the colorful buds pop in your arrangement.

The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a popular Italian tradition, celebrated on Christmas Eve. This feast originated in Southern Italy, and the idea is to serve seven different seafood dishes. Two of the stars on this menu are often smoked eel and fried baccala. You can get very creative with variations of your dishes or even make seven different fish-based appetizers and supplement your table with antipasto and pasta.

Why seven? There are many theories, one ties to the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church, others say it symbolizes the church's seven virtues: faith, hope, charity, temperance, prudence, fortitude and justice.

Hotel Holidays

Some people shudder at the thought of traveling away from home during the holidays. I also know people who look forward all year to this precious time off to flee to a beach resort or ski lodge. I picked up this book "American Hotel Stories" by Francisca Matteoli. It is a lovely collection of history, stories and photographs of some of the best hotels in the country.

My lucite trunk stays put when I travel, although a friend recently quipped that it would cut my wait time in half at airport security.

What's your favorite American hotel? Right now I'm really feeling The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida because it is like being transported to another era (and only a 3 hour flight from NYC!) Another dream spot for me is L'Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley...

I have a long-standing crush on Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica. I think this hotel captures both the best of the West Coast and the charms of the East Coast all in one very special spot in the sand.

Wherever you find yourself this holiday, it's time to start finalizing those travel plans!

Vintage Pins

I like collecting pins even though I rarely wear them on my clothes. I love putting them on throw pillows. I have one I like to put on a fabric evening purse. And, another one I like to pin with a head scarf to tie up my hair.

I've been keeping my eye out for a close enough match to the cameo pin above so that I can wear them as makeshift cuff links with a blazer. I think a pin can also look great fastened to the top of a wrapped holiday gift or to dress up a wine bag.

I'm going to pin my hopes on finding that cameo, and for a great week ahead! Happy Monday, Mermaids.

Hostess Gifts of Gold.

'Tis the season of holiday parties. I attended my first of the month on Saturday night. The hostess, Aisling, is one of the busiest (and beautiful) people I know. So, I brought her a hostess gift that was easy to maintain but beautiful--a festive plant with red holly and wrapped in snow white paper.

A mocktail and a manicure? The perfect Friday afternoon Pink-Me-Up. Today, I'm working on final photo proofs with my cousin in preparation for the "Mermaids & Martinis" book release! I can't believe the book is finally going to be on shelves in just a couple of months after such a long road.

To welcome the first days of December (arguably the month that hosts the most celebrations) I'm ringing in some pink. Sparkling water with a splash of cranberry juice makes the perfect shade to sip in the afternoon. And, is all the more fun to drink when dressed up in a martini glass with this cute vintage Mermaid accessory I found on eBay!

My Holy Grail for Hair.

I have what you call "Thick/Thin" hair. Meaning, I have a ton of hair, but the strands are really fine. What this translates to are majorly great hair days and some colossal bad ones.

Since I was asked to be the understudy in the movie "Tangled", I decided to try out a popular product called Moroccan Oil. http://moroccanoil.com/ It's made with an oil called Argan which I think is infused with magical properties. A tiny drop goes a long way to shinier and healthier hair and somehow, your hair dries twice as fast when you use it.

My hairstylist will appreciate that my envy has simmered down (slightly) about those Italian models in hair ads--you know the types, filmed walking down the street holding a cup of coffee with their shiny, layered and thick tresses bouncing lightly off of their shoulders. Mildly annoying.

Ok, I may not be Italian (or have hair like hers) but now that I'm part Moroccan, here's to no more bad hair days.

Holiday Ice.

I love these vintage inspired frosty vases around the holidays. Fill the little ones with bright colored candies or light with votives which reflect beautifully off of the mercury glass. The larger ones look festive holding flowers like amaryllis and greenery.

A mismatched set will look great clumped together or strewn down a long table for a lovely holiday dinner party.

I purchased these at a tiny home store in NYC which has since closed it's doors. You can find different versions and price points at West Elm or search online for 'Mercury Glass Votives and Vases'.

Mexican food makes most of us feel...well, festive. And full!

I think Mexican is one of the easiest ways to host a party in a pinch. You could order take-out or whip up a quick and easy guacamole, place a few soft flour tortillas in the oven, empty a bag of tortilla chips in a bowl and throw some coronas on ice! Or, coronitas...how cute are they? Almost as cute as this authentic stone ground bowl a friend got me from Rosa Mexicano. http://www.rosamexicano.com/

Below is a great recipe for Guacamole. Serves 2-4.

Rule of Fin: If an avocado does not "bounce back" to the touch, it is not ripe. Keep pits in your guacamole to keep it fresh and prevent browning when you store in refrigerator.

Ingredients:
• 2 ripe avocados
• 1/2 red onion, minced (about 1/2 cup)
• 1-2 serrano chiles, stems and seeds removed, minced
• 2 T cilantro leaves, finely chopped
• 1 T of fresh lime or lemon juice
• 1/2 t coarse salt
• A dash of freshly grated black pepper
• 1/2 ripe tomato, seeds and pulp removed, chopped

Garnish with limes, red radishes or jicama. Serve with tortilla chips or soft flour tortillas.

Directions:
1. Cut avocados in half, remove pit. Scoop out avocado from the peel, put in a mixing bowl.
2. Using a fork, mash the avocado. Add the chopped onion, cilantro, lime or lemon, salt and pepper and mash some more. Chili peppers vary individually in their hotness. So, start with half of one chili pepper and add to the guacamole to your desired ° of hotness. Keep the tomatoes separate until ready to serve. Remember that much of this is done to taste because of the variability in the fresh ingredients. So, start with this recipe and adjust to your taste.
3. Cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface of the guacamole to prevent oxidation from the air reaching it. Refrigerate until ready.
4. Just before serving, add the chopped tomato to the guacamole and mix.

Enjoy!

The Hermes Scarf Wears Many Hats.

Town & Country magazine asked my good friend and interior designer, Sarah Tallman, to create one of her signature 'Scarf Floor Pillows' for their Spring issue. http://www.sarahtallmandesign.com/

She and I went through my batch (I've loved collecting different scarves over the years) and settled on this green, nautical-inspired Hermes scarf (http://www.hermes.com/) which now has a home on my living room floor.

I like to use it for extra seating if I have a few friends over or as a makeshift table for cocktails or tea.

The Hermes scarf or any kind of scarf really can wear many hats! I've seen people frame their scarf and hang as a decorative piece of wall art and also tie as a purse. I've used mine for head wraps and table runners. I've tied one into a 'scarf-shirt' and wore it under a suit. I also tied one of my faves as a bright, patterned 'cumberbund' when wearing all black.

What is it about her? I created my own little shrine to Coco because every time I look at it, I am reminded that the most beautiful, feminine qualities are timeless.

When asked what she wore to bed, Marilyn Monroe replied, "A few drops of Chanel #5." Marilyn would be 85 this year! I'm sure she would still be knocking it out of the park looks-wise.

I recently went to a perfume lab and did a blind "smell-test". Turns out, my favorites were either very French (no surprise there!) or men's cologne. What is your favorite scent and how does it make you feel?

I was home for Thanksgiving and spent some memorable time with my family. To cap off the trip, I also shopped my Mom's closet. If you met my Mom, you may say: "Michele, I love your ring!" and she very well may take it off her finger and hand it to you. I've inherited that trait from her too--my philosophy is if you have fallen out of "love" with a material thing, why not pass it along to someone who is newly in love?

Of course, one will never part with certain sentimental pieces of value. For my Mom, one is a 70's ceramic hand-painted owl hanging from a rope that my Dad bought her at a tag sale when they first began dating.

For me, I would not let go of a shrimp ring from the 80's that belonged to my Grandmother which I like to wear around my neck on a chain. And, now, I'll add these four things to my "keep-forever" file. A jade and pearl necklace with antique gold coins, a filigree gold bangle, the sweetest gold puffed heart and a chunky Jade bracelet from the 60's.

Stay Curious, Don't Stay Too Long.

Life is the ultimate seesaw. We stay in one place too long and we might feel bored or stifled. We move around too much--seeking and searching--and we can become a bottomless pit of curiosity, never feeling fulfilled. For me, I think finding a balance will be my forever quest.

I keep these books in my living room to remind me to always travel and to stay curious. But, I keep the mala beads on top because they were given to me at a yoga class right down the street from my apartment. Which, reminds me that the best gifts are sometimes right around the corner.

The monkey is sort of my apartment's best friend. On any given day, you may see him on a make-shift bar holding pistachio nuts and another week he will hold court with matchboxes in his banana bowl for easy candle lighting. Some weeks, he also travels to my desk to hold a stack of my business cards. So, he moves around alot, but also likes to be right at home.

Gypsies & Desert Moons

I love when something small inspires me to host a party. Like a postcard or a book.

I feverishly snatched up this book "Gypset", published by Assouline, when I saw it marked down at Saks on the top floor. The styles are seductive whether you love a bohemian look or not. Think squash blossom turquoise necklaces, flowing pants and scarfs in the hair.

I gave a copy to my mom (she named her dog Gypsy!) because she was a former boho-chic kind of girl, but also, I knew she would find inspiration for decorating her home in the book.

I can't wait to invite friends to arrive in their own version of a Gypset style to the party. I've already ordered little gold bell anklets to pass out to the ladies at the door and am working on a recipe for a "Desert Moon" cocktail.

Fall Fetes.

Fall is in the air. High boots, chunky sweaters and lots more walking around the city now that it's not like walking through "Humidity Soup". Other things I can't wait for: Pumpkin soup, butternut squash "fries" and hosting an Octoberfest party.

At my Octoberfest party, the perfect party favor will be the ingredients to make homemade mulling spices packaged in a mason jar with a recipe card.

As the guest of a Fall fete last month, my perfect hostess gift was this pot of lavender honey I picked up in September from the Sag Harbor Farmer's Market.

This is my favorite recipe for mulling spices. It’s so easy!

2 t whole allspice
1/4 t whole cloves
1 whole cinnamon stick
1 strip orange rind, thinly peeled

Put the above ingredients in a plastic zip-top bag and beat gently with a rolling pin. Bring two cups of water to a boil and then add a couple of tablespoons of your mulling spices. Simmer the mixture for a warm and inviting smell. Store the remaining mulling spices in an airtight container. An even easier way to achieve this is to simmer apple cider on the stove mixed with a few sticks of cinnamon but be careful not to overboil! I once ruined a great pan by turning the water on too high.

The Betting Guest: A fun invitation idea--create and send out betting sheets that feature the details of your event and ask your guests to bring them to the party with their top horse picks for the chance to win prizes.

"Minty & The Thoroughbred": Get into the spirit of the south by providing mint juleps accompanied by mini pecan pies. We love serving up two versions of this classic cocktail, this year we themed them "Minty & The Thoroughbred". The Thoroughbred was for our guests that craved a little less mint, a little more bourbon...if you plan ahead you can pre-order authentic mint julep cups that are monogrammed.

Buffet of Roses: You don’t need to be at Churchill Downs to make your place feel like you’re racing for the roses. Dress your buffet table with a bed of roses...cut tons of red rosebuds and place them along the center of your table.  Buy another bouquet of miniature red rosebuds and create horseshoe shapes with those to decorate the corners of large white serving platters. Go to the hardware store and purchase some brass rings, those will look great as napkin rings. Buy two or three traditional black velvet riding hats (or plastic to be cheap and chic), overturn, place white bowls inside and fill with appetizers like chips and dips, nuts, etc.

Leave Your Boots at the Door: A fun way to welcome your guests to your party?  Visit a local tack shop or log onto eBay and buy a vintage pair of black riding boots. Fill each one with a lovely green topiary tree and place the pair at the door as a celebratory greeting for your guests.

Hats Off: Big, beautiful hats are a requirement; if guests forget - set up a little "stable table" at the party with plenty of plastic “derby” hats found at your local party supply store.  Lay out beads, feathers, flowers and glue next to the hats so guests can decorate and write the names of the horses they are rooting for!   Go to a thrift store or search online for some beautiful and budget-friendly hats--hang them throughout your home on doors or give some away as prizes to those lucky betters.

'Laid Back' Love With A Twist...

A wedding that was nothing short of breathtaking was perfectly captured by one of our favorite photographers, Abby Liga.

The stunning bride, Katie, and her professional wake boarder groom, Kyle, wanted a laid back atmosphere to reflect their fun loving personalities but still craved an elegant setting.

Katie and Kyle struck the perfect balance between formal and fun. Guests were welcomed with cranberry garnished champagne flutes as they were seated at sunset to watch the ceremony. Later, guests helped themselves to a S'mores bar, an old fashioned candy bar and then rode their sugar highs to a surprise trunk full of disguises and a Polaroid camera where they captured memories for the couple's photo guest book.

The Mermaids were thrilled to be a part of this beautiful day.

Our holiday spotlight shines on a group of friends who have a kept a tradition called "The Holiday Loop". This is their TWELFTH year (simply amazing!) so this year is appropriately themed:

The Twelve Days of Christmas.
How does it work? A few friends volunteer their homes as a "stop" on the loop. After the theme and all of the stops are decided, each person creates a menu, cocktail, decor and attire based on the theme.

Hot chocolate
Dollop of whipped cream

Grocery List--Get the Groceries OFF your List! Whether you're hosting a sit-down dinner, buffet, or casual snacks--shopping ahead of time will make you more relaxed and allow more time at home to prepare. Make sure your list is extremely detailed to avoid running back to the store for last minute items. Rule of Fin: Break it down by courses and double check against what's already in the kitchen. Getting halfway through a cheese platter withouth enough crackers just won't work.

Mermaids Getting Toasty. Rule of Fin: Figure 2 drinks per person. A bottle of wine pours around 4 glasses. A bottle of liquor pours around 15 drinks. For a little extra help calculating how much alcohol you will need, use this drink calculator.

Top Table. Grab your trusty tablecloth and iron or steam as needed. Set dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, silverware, water and wine glasses depending on your menu. Enjoy your tabletop as much as your menu.

Buffet Basics. Place stacked plates, bowls, napkins and silverware at one end to welcome guests. Platters and serving utensils are placed in the middle to allow guests comfortable serving space.

Notable Napkins. Dress your table with colorful, creative napkins. Fold your napkins into fun shapes--use your own personal napkin rings or tie napkins with twine and tuck a little something special in each one like a twig, cinnamon stick or fresh flower.

Find Your Place in the World. Place cards are as personal as they are practical for any sit down dinner. Take a few minutes to really think about your guests personalities. Where they are in their life? In the world? Create place cards and seating charts accordingly. Rule of Fin: It's best to seat guests with more outgoing personalities in the center of the table.

Build A Bar. Set a separate table, clear a counter or a small decorated tray--these make for great bar solutions---especially for tight spaces like NYC apartments!

A Chilly Greeting. Set out your ice bucket with tongs or a wine/beer tub, a large punch bowl or a trash bin lined with a trash bag for ice cold drinks! Stock a variety of glasses based on your beverage selections. Set out beverages that do not need to be refrigerated such as red wine, liquors and mixers to save time.

Garnish Me Pretty. Prepare garnishes such as lemons, limes and cherries as well as bar accessories: wine/beer openers, drink stirrers, and swizzle sticks ahead of time.

Timing Is Everything. Just before guests are due to arrive, fill your ice containers and add beer, white wine, champagne and chillers. Most importantly, pour yourself a much needed cocktail!

Fabulous Flowers. Fresh flowers are always a cheerful and inviting addition to any table or buffet. Fill your favorite vase or place multiple vases down the center of your table or buffet.

Let There Be Leftovers. Scattering your flower filled bud vases on your table, buffet, or around your home is a brilliant way to use any leftover flowers.

Creative Centerpieces. Flowers not really your style? Fill your hurricane vases with whatever your want! A pillar candle surrounded by cranberries or leaves makes a fabulous Fall centerpiece.
